Okay, i am 14 weeks right now, i know i still have at least 6 weeks to see find out the baby's sex. Now, would it be smart to get the ultrasound determining the sex from the doctor's office and then getting a 3d/4d scan afterwards to actually 'see' the picture instead of guessing how many lines you see or if you see a little 'turtle'? What are your thoughts? I'm so excited... i hope it's a beautiful little girl, but i would be so happy with a boy also...! :)

That's what I wanted to do. I got my big one done at 18 weeks and right away she said "its a boy. After I got home that day, I was reading up on all the info I could about the techs being wrong about the sex. So I called a few places that do the 3d/4d and they said they wouldnt see anyone before 26 weeks...sooooo I could suggest you get your 20 week done, then just wait a while and get the 3d done too. That way you can be sure you wont have to return all those pink or blue things :) Good luck and congrats!

I've never had a 4D ultrasound, but I did have the regular kind a few weeks ago. They're a lot better than they used to be!

Trust me, you can see everything! There was no doubt that we're having a boy. LOL

The only problem we would have had is if the baby had been positioned badly or had his legs crossed. My friend just went through that... she had five ultrasounds done and still wasn't sure what she would wind up with. She finally had a girl, which they had suspected.

Moral of the story... the quality of a regular ultrasound will be sufficient for you to find out your baby's gender. You don't need a 4D unless you really want one. :)

Good luck, Momma!

The answer you get can always be inaccurate. The only two fool-proof methods of determining gender are amniocentesis (which has a 1 in 200 rate of miscarriage) and waiting until baby is born. However, if your baby is in the right position, the tech should be able to get a good look at whether it's a boy or girl. I had my ultrasound done at 19 weeks 3 days and the tech was positive it was a boy. I had to have another scan a month later since he didn't cooperate the first time for them to look at his heart and that scan showed that it was still a boy.

If you have a knowledgable tech doing the ultrasound (or the doc themselves) the standard ultrasound is pretty accurate for determining the sex of the baby. Like someone said before, the point of the ultrasound is not to find out what you're having, that's just a perk. 3D/4D ultrasounds are nice momentos, but are often times done by less experienced people. Best of luck.

Can the scan show the gender of my baby?

Most of the time they should be able to tell the sex of the baby by about 22 weeks. The correct visualization of any fetal part depends on many factors such as fetal position, amount of amniotic fluid and thickness of the abdominal wall. Some hospitals have a policy of not telling women the sex of the baby, as it is not usually possible to be 100 per cent certain.

Know what to look for - 3 lines or 'turtle/snail'

Ultrasound scans done in later pregnancy or 3D scans can make it easier to see the gender of a baby. The sonographer may not always get a good view of the private parts of the fetus for many reasons and therefore may not be able to give you an accurate answer.

Good luck

Ultrasounds are not done to determine the sex of the baby, that's just a perk. They are performed to determine the health and development of your baby...

Personally, if you have the money for a 3d/4d scan, great (although be aware that the effects of multiple ultrasounds on the baby are unknown), but I'd rather spend my money on other things (insurance does not cover the cost of these more detailed u/s)

Get the doctor's ultrasound done first, you may be surprised by how clear it actually is. The 3d/4d ultrasound will be cool later on but first you want to make sure everything is going okay with the baby. You don't want to get the fancy one done first and have the tech mumble under their "I've never seen that before..."

At 20 weeks I go the regular ultra sound and I got a 100% certain boy, the tech said that she garenteed he was a boy. I even have the ultra sound picture of it and there is no questioning it everyone can see that its a boy.
I would say try the ultrasound if your not happy with the result then ge tthe four d

I do not think it matter if boy or girl... As long as health has 10 little finger on each hand and 10 little toes i be fine.. and health is main point of baby.. ..
My husband wanted babygirl... because then she would look really pretty growing up.. because of mix of two different culture.. but for me it doesn't matter which gender.. as long it health...
remember baby is god gift to us... and they can take away... so just think plus then the negative.
It doesn't matter if girl or boy i be happy no matter which way.. but it be cool to have ultrasound early to determine the gender.. but really up to god to give you boy or girl...
All i would say health baby is good...
and having girl teach them early not to have sex and teach them that boys r bad... :)

Usually the Doc's office is pretty accurate on the sex. I had a 3 and 4D done and they only took pics of her face...but I think they are worth it if you can afford to have one done!
