Yes, it is true. Female circumcision is practiced in some parts of Africa, Indonesia, and Western Asia, mostly in Arab countries. It is done to ensure that women would be virgins when they get married. There are different types of female circumcision:

excision-the removal of clitoris and labia minora
Clitoridectomy- involves the removal or splitting of the clitoral hood
Infibulation- involves extensive tissue removal of the external genitalia, including all of the labia minora and the inside of the labia majora. Then it is sewn until it's pencil-size. When a woman marries the husband would open it with a knife also.

Female circumcision not only ensures virginity but fidelity on women's part. It is oftentimes performed with a knife without anesthesia.

I've read a testimony from a woman who undergone female circumcision:

She was very young then. When she arrived home she wondered why the elders were there in her house talking with her parents. Then, they approached her and told her to go to her room. She was then instructed to "undress" and lie down. The elders performed female circumcision with her feet being tied. She said it was so excruciatingly painful. A knife was used to mutilate her external genitalia. Then it was sewn until it's pencil-size. When it was over, there was a celebration. She was then instructed to dance and she collapsed in front of the crowd. When she woke-up everyone insulted her for being a coward.

A lot of feminists are fighting this issue, clamoring to the United Nations that these countries performing female circumcision be not supported. But again we are talking of culture here. Culture is relative. What is good for us may be bad for others and vice versa. So, who are we to judge them?

I myself is against this issue based on my spiritual and cultural perspectives. But it is really hard to fight when we're talking of culture. Just because we're in post-indusrial bombarded with high technology, doesn't mean our culture is far more superior than them.

Yes.
The most common form of it consists of removal and/or surgery of various parts of the female genitals, typically the removal of the clitoral hood (Clitoridotomy) and possibly removal of the clitoris (Clitoridectomy).
This particular form of female circumcision is entirely analogous to male circumcision.

"Islamic juridical logic cannot acknowledge the distinction between female and male circumcision, both being the mutilation of healthy organs which is damaging to the physical integrity of the child, whatever the underlying religious motivations. Furthermore, both practices violate the Koran: "Our Lord, You did not create all this in vain" (3:191), and "[He] perfected everything He created" (32:7). In our opinion, a god who demands that his believers be mutilated and branded on their genitals the same as cattle, is a god of questionable ethics." It is done for many reasons.

For example:
“She loses only a little piece of the clitoris, just the part that protrudes. The girl does not miss it. She can still feel after all. There is hardly any pain. Women’s pain thresholds are so much higher than men’s.”

“The parts that are cut away are disgusting and hideous to look at. It is done for the beauty of the suture.”

“An uncircumcised vulva is unclean and only the lowest prostitute would leave her daughter uncircumcised. No man would dream of marrying an unclean woman. He would be laughed at by everyone.”

“Doctors do it,
so it must be a good thing.”

The question is: Are these valid reasons?
Well, the exact same reasons are used for male circumcision so they must be valid.

Getting rid of the sarcasm, female genital mutilation is disgusting but so is male genital mutilation.

I find it atrocious that osme people on these boards will condemn FGM but actually promote MGM.
This is very sad.

With respect to MGM:
The foreskin is the most sensitive part of the penis and therefore very significant during sexual intercourse. The foreskin reduces the force required by the penis to enter the vagina.

Performing circumcision on a child can and does result in the deaths of children due to blood loss and/or failure of the immune system.
It can and does result in very significant scaring.
It can and does result in sexual problems later in life.

There are just as bad consequences for FGM.

Actually in some men's societies, these kinds of rituals are still performed. When this procedure is done to women it is considered to be an act against humanity - as it is a forced procedure. The operation is a removal of the lips of the vulva and just hearing that makes me cringe! This practice is also still in effect in Third World countries. I read this is a National Geographic magazine!

Circumcising in women (very young girls) was and partly still is popular in Africa. They cut of the womens clitoris and inner lips and then stitch the outer lips together so it just leaves a tiny hole. This procedure is very painful and cruel and illegal, but many poorer parts of Africa still practice it.

yes it is true, in america, australia and the u.k. female circumcision is an elective proceedure avaliable after 16 year old (medical age for consent)
female circumcision removes the hood from the clitoris.
often confused with proceedures in africa (clitorectomy, vulvectomy and infibulation) the media, especially the american media and popular belief confuses the 2 constantly. but it is completely legal after the age of consent and offered at most cosmetic/plastic surgery clinics.

Female circumcision is a sick, barbaric practice. It's not legal in most Western countries.

It is the removal of the clitoris. Some cultures use it to remove a woman's ability to climax. I have heard of one method that involves a needle to dislodge the tip of the clitoris until mucous comes out. The clitoris is then scraped off.

It's pretty much a control issue for cultures that do not want women to experience sexual joy.

Certain cultures practice some form of female circumcision (or mutilation). It has no biological advantage to have it done. It is more a social control.

It is a very common practice for female Muslims in South East Asian countries. It's a topic that is rarely spoken of.

I'm not sure in what country its done but I did see a documentary where women were circumcized. They cut off the clitoris. I think the point of it is to take away the pleasure for a woman so that she will not cheat. I think!!
