Hi, stay away from Dell if you live in the uk. Their support is crap. Must be a lot lot better in America from what I have read on here.

Most basic laptops these days have a decent enough spec for what you want. Photos are quite larg files so look at size of hard drive although this isn't so much of a problem if you buy and external hard drive. These come in very useful. I have a 250gig which I bought for £70.

All of our photos, music, movies and set up files are stored on this keeping just the minimum on the laptops. This means that when we re-format our laptops to get rid of all the crap you get when surfing etc, its just a simple process of putting the recovery disc in the laptop and accessing the files from the external driver. We re-format about every 6 months.

I would suggest a minimum of 1gb ram, 128mb graphics, dvd re-writer, wireless but all basic laptops comes with this anyway.

I have a very basic acer 3692 wlmi which ticks all of the above boxes and it was £400 but has 224mb graphics. My son has an acer 5612 wlmi which is similar spec but with dual core and he uses this for web design. The 5612 though has better sound and better graphics which is surprising as it is the same onboard graphics accelerator.

The 5612 is an excellent machine is available now at less than £480 from comet, now has a 120gb hard drive. We paid £600 for this machine in August last year.

You'll want a multimedia type of laptop. It need to have Window Vista Premium, at least 1 GB RAM -- 2 GB is much better, Intel Core 2 Duo cpu, a big hard drive to store all your photos/mp3s, cd/dvd burner, a multi-card reader and it doesn't hurt to get a laptop that has a dedicated video card instead of an integrated card. You also want a reliable laptop since you're going to use it a lots. I would recommend you look for the Toshiba or HP laptops.

Then for those things, the system should be mid range. I should need to fancy trimmings, but should be a good brand, with upgrade cabability.

A few good deals are in my links

Avoid Dell, Medion, Acer, Dixons Group(PC World, Dixons, Currys), Comet, Staples etc

The best deals and after sales service is found at the outlets not found on the high street.

you can want all you want but it all comes down to price. i am a personal lover of dell because its so easy to upgrade parts so its almost like buying a 100 dollar laptop and then upgrading it to a 450 dollar laptop. its a cutally a true story. i sold it for 560 actually.
