The state of Virginia is named in honor of the "Virgin Queen" Elizabeth I (Elizabeth never married, because if she married the king of one country (like Spain), then England might have been attacked by the king of another country (like France)). Since Elizabeth never married, she kept England independent, and to some extent, out of the politics of the rest of Europe. Since she was known as the virgin queen, the colony of Virginia was named after her nickname.
The counties of the western part of Virginia decided to remain in the Union when the state of Virginia decided to succeed and join the confederacy. These western counties formed their own state which remained loyal to the Union. Since they were the western part of Virginia, they were called "West Virginia".

Virginia orginally included West Virginia. The two parts split in the American Civil War; 'west' Virginia is, of course, the western part of the original state and colony.
