You just square them; for example, a 1 meter by 2 meter box would have area 2 m^2.

Well, meters into m2 is simple-you simply find the area of the object; rectangles are side X side, etc. To convert yards into m2, I would convert the yards into meters first; one yard is .9144 meters. If you have yd2 which you want to convert to m2, then multiply the yd2 by .836 (that's .9144^2)

You made a mistake measuring in inches should have used a metric tape then length x width = square meters easy

You don't. Meters and yards measure length, square meters measure area.
