The length of an Olympic pool is 50 meters. So 500 meters would be five round trips in the pool (back and forth)

Generally speaking if you are swimming a 500 in a race it will be in short course yards and it will be 20 laps. It will also be 20 laps in a short course meter pool, but it is not raced at the length because all meters races are swum as a 400 instead of a 500. In a 50 meter pool it would be 10 laps.

I swam the 500 in competition. In a 25 yard pool it is 20 laps. If you're lucky you can have a counter (an actual person), that sticks a board with the lap numbers on it in the water when you are making your turns. On your last turn they show a big red sign in the water to let you know it's the last lap and to kick it into high gear and finish.
I was eternally grateful to my faithful counter Andrew. I always lost count because the event is so long, I would start thinking about other things and lose count.
Good luck.

Most pools in America are 25 yards across or 25 meters across. One lap is two times across (lengths) a pool, or 50 yards/meters. To go 500 m/yd, it will take 10 laps. This also can be represented by 20 lengths of the pool, but you asked for laps.

This is my least favorite event, if the pool is a 25 yard, its 20 laps, and 25 laps in a 20 yard pool. I don't know the olympic ones but those are the ones I know if, as I Have swam the 500 numerous times, by the way, i know this probably isn't right, but one lap for me is going in one direction, and going back is another lap, i don't know how you count it, i go by lengths.

In highschool and other recreational leagues, the pool is actually 25 yd. In these leagues the 500 is 20 laps of the pool.

4 laps back to back is a 100, take it easy so the 500 would be 10 laps, take it slow the first couple of laps.then gradually work your way up to where you Can go faster.

If it's a 50m/yd pool then it's 10 laps. (A lap is down and back)
If it's a 25m/yd pool then it's 20 laps.
