How did the saying "get hit with an ugly stick" come about when describing someone not very attractive?

One would assume that it is a joke about how the kid got so ugly--by being repeatedly beaten until grotesque and deformed.

While Urban Dictionary does not give a background for the phrase, there are several amusing definitions.

I don't know, but you'll know she's really ugly if you can see the marks on her where they've been touching her with that ten foot poll.
