Depends on the person and the firmness of the bed. If the bed is firm then on your back is good. If the bed is not so firm then on your side is best.

actually whatever position you find most comfortable, the important thing about sleep is getting it, and for that you have to be comfortable. Having a good matress that gives adequate support is always a good thing, but how you chose to lay on it is entirely up to your comfort level, once you are asleep you tend to assume the most comfortable position anyway.

If you have back pain, I can only sleep on my side. Sleeping on my back or especially my tummy makes the pain miserable. If it's just a general question, as long as you maintain proper spine alignment, it's a personal choice.

Get a body pillow that you can stick between your knees for good alignment. Or one of those temperpedic pillows work well. The adjust to you to give you the best support.

I have had 2 back surgeries, and find it's better for me to sleep on my side. The stomach offers no support..and for me , neither does my back.
