One word; taxes.
When you go pay your income taxes, that money you pay goes to the Federal government. The Federal government takes in approx. 6.2 trillion every year. But 60% of that 6.2 trillion is already spent to pay the interest on the debt.
There's also major taxes on gas. Here in Tennessee, I think there's about a $0.60 tax on every gallon of gas you buy here. Right now, it's still under $3.00, though. If the government would take taxes off of the gas, it would be so much cheaper than you'd expect it to be. But most of the gas tax is used to pay for the war, if I'm not mistaken.
So, there's your answer; taxes. The government doesn't require a balanced budget like it requires all states to have, so they could spend the money even if they didn't take up taxes. They only do that to keep us from going into the hundreds of trillions of dollars in debt, and making the dollar worth even less.

US...We support this...
But did you know that it is NOT legally required for anyone to pay a Federal Income Tax (IRS).
The local (city) and state tax is different but there is NO IRS TAX CODE, but you assume that you have to pay it.
Well, I know that I will never do it again and I would DARE the IRS to come after me to arrest me. Everyone they charge they LET GO because they can't hold them because THERE IS NO LAW for federal taxes.
So keep paying it so they can create more corruption and build up their revenue while the rest of us:
1. Live off of credit cards
2. Get by on sub-standard middle class incomes
3. Result to immoral means (ie: theft - blue collar, white collar and Identity) to survive.
Just watch Aaron Russo's film to WAKE UP!

As everyone else has said - taxes.
But to Barbischelle's comment that income tax is illegal - feel free not to pay it, Barbie. You just happen to be WRONG. Here's what makes it legal:
"The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration."
That's the 16th Amendment to the US Constitution. Tell me how that makes income tax illegal.

Taxes but also selling of bonds and assests and of course investment.
In regards to Barbie's comment..absolutely right no legal requirment to pay taxes, but the IRS has every legal right to get that money either through garnished wages or any other legal means at their disposal, which in the end they will always win..so just pay your taxes...however any not tax payer does not support the troops...remember that!!!!

Payroll taxes (income and social security) paid by workers, quarterly estimated tax payments paid by wealthy people who don't work for others, excise taxes on some goods when they leave the manufacturer and income taxes from corportations who are patriotic enough to actually pay them.
