The general public got along fine without them (at home) until the 1990s. The world got along without them until probably the 1980s. People checked their own spelling in dictionaries, added and subtracted on paper, wrote letters with a pen and mailed them at a mailbox/post office, offices used typewriters and purchased company letterhead...
Today, we'd be in some trouble if suddenly all computers stopped working. Utilities (electric, gas, etc.) would shut down, some cars wouldn't run, ATM machines wouldn't work--for that matter we probably wouldn't be able to use our 'cards' to make purchases at stores, etc., etc., etc.

Well, it depends on your view of important. For gamers like me and L337ish ( i own an alienware too ), it is an important part of daily life as a way to keep ourselves entertained, and video games have created 1000's of jobs for developers and texturers and publishers and so on.

It's not an absolute definite basic for every day life, but it's something I'm addicted to, so I'd hate to see the withdrawal symptoms of that.
Generally, it's not too important, because I'm pretty sure we can live without it.
