If the ink cartridge is empty you will not be able to print anything

If you have a black cartridge and a colour cartridge then:

You can print in black even if the colour cartridge is empty.

You may be able to print in black if the black cartridge is empty by using all three colours in the colour cartridge. This tends to be a rather poor black, more of a very dark brown colour.

yes, of course this is possible, providing the empty cartridge is not in the printer, but one that has some ink in it is.
