A good practice is to backup your data on a regular basis and verify your backups prior to any system changes. A little effort now will save you a lot of headaches in the future. I'd suggest one of the following:

1) Burn the photos (and other important files) to CD or DVD
2) Copy them to another hard drive (either a USB connected hard disk, a share on another computer, or install a second drive in your current computer)

Personally I would not upgrade to Vista until at least one service pack has been issued due to compatibility problems. However if you do then make sure as others have said to back up your important files. USB hard drives are now very reasonable in price, £60 for 250 gig and 500 gig for under £100. The extra storage is always handy and you get to have a backup which enables you to access any important files from another computer should your main one have any problems. hope this helps.

It's a good idea to save your photos first, the best way is to burn them to a cd/dvd. A clean Vista install will wipe everything from your hard drive. Even if you do an upgrade something bad may happens.

The easier and most sensible solution is not to install Vista in the first place. It's a waste of time, if you want a change for the better - get a Mac.

As with doing anything with computers, yes. Although it "shouldn't" be a problem, always back up.

There are two kinds of people: those who have experienced data loss, and those who will. Remember the 3 rules of computing. 1) Back up 2) Back up 3) Back up.

It's always a good idea to save your data on some other media just in case of hard disk failure.
