The BMW factory rain sensor is located directly IN FRONT, slightly higher than the interior rear view mirror.

If this box in question is "by" (ie; in front but beside) the mirror, it has to be something that was added aftermarket.

My guess is a remotely mounted ("concealed") radar detector.

The box would probably be about the size of a match box and have an infra-red "eye" window in front - detecting lidar ("laser") signals from cops. The previous owner probably installed it then took the main unit away without bothering removing the sensors.

Check behind your grill, you might find a bigger box facing the front (the radar antenna).

Here's what the unit might look like:

On the windshield, with antenna-like extensions? That is receiver for remote starter. An auto electric shop can let you know for sure, but, if the bmw sales manager didn't know, then it isn't an exclusive bmw feature.

could also be a "Tag" type transponder for automatic payment on toll roads / bridges. Are there any wires coming out of the box and going somewhere? A transponder would have no wires.
