How can I get rid of gnats in my yard?

For some reason the past two years during the spring and summer months of course, our yard is just infested with gnats. We can't go out to enjoy the weather, that's how bad they are. Is there anything we can put on the grass to control them?

we spray with malathion and that helps with gnats and mosquitoes but doesnt hurt birds or animals

Napalm works quite well. Keeps your neighbors quiet too.

Actually, the malathion answer is a good one. You're pretty much going to have to use some chemical if you don't want gnats. Or you could buy a screened gazebo and put that up.
