This bird kept flying head-on into my bedroom window repeatedly. I tried to drive it off with my cat, with the hose, with noise, nothing had any effect. The bird simply returned a few minutes later and continued battering itself until it finally fell dead outside my window. The whole process took about 2 hours and I have never been so baffled about something in my life!

I'm sorry you had to see that. Go to the search engine and type in Global warming on birds. No I put the link in from the Audubon Society. I care for a lot of different types of "birds", and the change in behavior is noticably different over the last 3 years. Where I live now there are a lot of different species going wonkers trying to mutilate rear view windows on cars. Some of my birds I have had for over ten years. Though they are in house, (I have a lot in an aviary outside) they also feel the affect of GW. Maybe just me, but I don't know.

The probable reason is that the bird saw its reflection in the window and attempted to drive away an intruder. This is especially likely at this time of year, since it is breeding season and males will fight other males, real or "reflected" to protect their territory, mates, and young.

You can prevent this from happening again by placing some sort of "shadow" outline on the window, like a diving HAWK shadow or anything else that will break up the reflection and make the bird aware of the window. This will also help prevent "crash dives" from birds that are trying to go THROUGH the window.

Sounds like a gypsy curse. Burn all of your bed sheets, take a mustard bath, then recite the lyrics from Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby. You'll be fine.

Birds don't know or care what a window is. If they see somewhere they want to go, they will try to go there. Transparency is sublime to the 'bird brains.'

Either the bird had an illness (you didn't touch it did you?) or it's short term memory was whacked the first time it flew into the window. Birds cannot see glass as well as humans can, so they will fly into windows often.

I doubt it tried to commit suicide...perhaps it was just stupid.

Actually, the bird probably wanted to get into that window for some reason...birds don't know what glass is, like humans do...it just kept trying and trying...I don't think its girlfriend kicked him out of the nest or anything...he just wanted through the window.

The persistence of the bird to repeat the same action over and over again regardless of external stimulation and/or success makes me believe that he was NOT trying to get in your house.

I would be more inclined to say that this bird was ramming the reflection of the bird in the window because he percieved it to be a competing male. It is spring time ya know!

it truly is no longer hassle-free to categorise animals killing themselves as suicide, even whilst they make a option to do something that takes their lives. Whales will sea coast themselves yet is it suicide? in all threat no longer, greater probably there is something incorrect with them internally. I had a fish as quickly as that constantly jumped out of the fish bowl, actually 3-4 cases an afternoon. became he committing suicide? definite yet we saved putting him lower back and he saved leaping out. I placed him in a pond in our backyard and he remains in there. So he wasn't committing suicide, he became attempting to get out of someplace that he did no longer pick to be. Now i might agree that they take part in passive suicide. to illustrate, whilst 2 older canines stay collectively and one dies. each and every from time to time the different refuses to consume or drink until eventually they die. So it seems that they are depressed over the shortcoming of the different and reason themselves to die. although, it truly is no longer probably suicide and rather an animal no longer desirous to consume or drink because of the fact they do no longer understand the place the different is. So i might say no, they do no longer dedicate suicide interior the comparable way as people do. they only have a constrained ability and attempt to alter something of their situation.

first we've all seen birds fly into clear windows, as their ultra-violet vision probably has trouble with it. however, this sounds extreme, and a lot like the behavior, exhibited by an animal with rabies. no wild animal will intentionally do this. it was definitely ill.

Sounds like this brd has an infestion of some kind.

Don't touch it. But you should call your local department of health. Especially if it was a type of jay.
