I had two new Kohler toilets installed in March. The guest toilet starting making "false flushing" sounds about 2-3 weeks ago. It was infrequent but is now seems to be happening more often. The toilet in my master bedroom started doing the same thing about a week ago. The two toilets are not far apart & both are on the first floor...not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I've read about the phantom flushing but I can't tell if it's the same thing. what is happening with my toilets is not lasting even 15 seconds...maybe a couple seconds at best. I can only liken it to the sound that happens at the end of a full flush (sounds like the water is on...think of filling a tub while you're on the other side of the wall) followed by the "ka-clunk" sound that happens at the very end of normal flush.

2007 has been an expensive home improvement/replacement nightmare. I can't afford much more!!

What you are experiencing is simply the toilet is maintaining a full tank of water. The flapper is the #1 cause of water loss in a toilet. Turn the water off, and flush the tank. Remove the flapper, and inspect the area that seats to the flush valve. If it is curled or wrinkled, then it is defective and needs to be replaced. A simple test for a leaking flapper is to put several drops of food coloring into the tank, and don't flush the toilet. Wait about 15 minutes, and check the water in the bowl. If you see any of the food coloring in the bowl, the flapper is defective. A flapper is about $3. Good luck!

Phantom flushing is usually caused by a leaking flapper. The water from the tank leaks into the bowl and the tank water control thinks you flushed and adds water until it reaches the proper level. Try pouring a couple cups of coffee (liquid only, no grounds) into the tank as it is refilling after flushing.. Watch the bowl after a half hour and see if the water changes color. This will tell you if it is a flapper leak. Even though the toilets are new, you may have some sediment around the sealing surface for the flapper or the flapper may not be adjusted (with the chain/strap) and it is allowing water to leak through. Also check the small hose that goes to the overflow tube. It should be mounted above (not into) the tube.

Sounds like the flapper valve is leaking. This is actually pretty common especially if you use chemicals in your tank. Can be simply solved by replacing the flapper valve, check at your local hardware store for the correct type for your toilet.
