Id have to say Centaurs, because according to the myths they posessed superhuman strength, almost like semi-gods. The only people who could mess with them were the Heros, like Pyrithoes, and Hercules( remember those encounters?). Centurions, even though they wre highly trained soldiers....well, they are still just humans, therefore i have to give preference to Centaurs.

The Centaurs charge!

The Centurions are already in the tortoise formation, the spears come out and kebab the Centaurs!

The remaining Centaurs run about 500m away and look into the bottom of their cups of tea to try to read the tea leaves, is that the Grim they see?

No it's a shadow above their heads! They run like the scared horses they are - right back towards the Centurions, but the Centurions are also out of formation and are looking up wards.

Lazer beams fill the air shredding, scorching and mutilating Centurions and Centaurs. The smell of charred horse meat and death fills the air! It seems like the flying monkeys have been brought back from the dead and have been equipped with lazer guns and knuckle dusters. They win!

The Centaurs died before the Centurions did.

Since Centurions are military commanders and not rank and file soldiers, I'd have to say the Centaurs. While the Centurions were arguing about who should be in charge, the Centaurs filled 'em full of arrows and trampled what was left.

Does anyone have the element of surprise? That's the variable which could possibly shift the odds of success to the centurions. The other thing that could give the centurions an advantage is if they could force the centaurs to advance, hunker down, and topple them with their spears. If they could hold a phalanx formation to accomplish this goal, this might also give them some measure of advantage. Once the centaurs were down, their advantage would be lost. If neither is possible-- my bet is on the centaurs.

The Centaurs are essentially light calvary, but tend to not wear a lot of armor. The weapons they would employ would be light swords, horsebows, javelins, and possibly slings. Their tactics would revolve around lightning fast flanking manuevers, full-out charges, and peppering the enemy with arrows from a distance.

All of which the Romans have seen before.
They wear thick iron armor called lorica segmentata with heavy iron helmets, carry large rectangular shields called scutum, and bear short swords called gladius as well as daggers (pugio), javelins (pilatum), and special javelins called verutum that could pierce enemy shields and limbs, bend, become difficult to remove, and weigh their victim down. They also bear shortbows, and their archers can trade volleys with the centaurs until they all run out of arrows. The kicker is that the Roman archers are behind the shieldwall of the tortoise phalanx.
The Romans turn the "tortoise" into a "porcupine" bristling with spearpoints, and any centaur charging the shieldwall becomes a pincushion. With no easy way to get at the Romans the centaurs are destined to lose from attrition. When their numbers drop below 25% the Romans would split up into smaller groups and sysematically hunt the centaurs down.

Winner : Romans

Advantage: superior arms, armor, and battlefield experience.

The Centurions with their metal skin and blasters would be far superior to any arrow or half horse half man. Even though I guess they never seem to hit any of the main characters on Battlestar Galactica so maybe they would miss the Centaurs but they would be pretty fearsome.

The centurions win easily - they stay behind their shields and deflect anything coming their way. When a centaur gets too close he gets shishkebobbed.

give equal numbers i'd say the centaurs win.
they have an advantage in mobility, angle of attack and physical resistance. the centurions are expected to be better organized, but properly equipped centaurs should overcome that.

centaurs, because hte centurions can ride horses, but not be them.

the centaurs line up with pikes
so do the centurions.

the romans charge the centaurs full on with their cavalry, but the horses veer off at the last moment.

the centaurs do the same. the roman line breaks and is scattered by the archers and infantry
