I just watched Children of the Corn, I'm terrified of the children playing outside now but also wondering if Stephen King is as mad as I think he is, I mean where does he come up with that stuff, I might never be able to hug my nieces and nephews again or even have kids!

I think that writers in the same genre as Stephen King have to be at least a little sick to come up with some of the things they write.

I have only read a couple of Stephen King's books - but
getting round to it.

But there is a very fine line between insanity and genius.
Hitler. Tchaikovsky. Enoch Powell.
John Lennon of the Beatles wrote a book called 'Lennon in his own write'. First time I read it, I thought it was utter
rubbish - the ramblings of a mad man. 20 years later I
read it again, and I saw a different side to the book.

I saw a film once called Village of The Damned about
school kids with blond hair and blue eyes who
started controlling adults. It worried me for years because
it was so feasible. (There are 2 films under this name).

But writers hit the wire a long time ago. So to sell now,
they have to go OTT.

You will get over it .. wait until you watch The Stand its the only Stephen King book/movie worth watching.
The rest is a product of mind living in the woods of New England too long. See what you get when a kid doesn't watch TV and plays video games ;-)

Stephen King's a great writer with a vivid imagination.
I read in an interview once that he was heavily influenced by
"Tales from the Crypt" when he was a kid, which may be where he gets some of his ideas.

Stephen King is a great writer, without a doubt. But can you be a a great writer in the horror genre without being a little twisted yourself?

I think not.

My favorite books by King are "Misery" and "The Stand". You can't go wrong with that one. But he is sort of overrated. Dean Koontz is much scarier. But the books about Hannibal Lecter, by Thomas Harris, are truly frightening. Stephen King isn't some kind of psycho- just a person with a very overactive imagination! To write books like he does, you would have to dig deep within yourself, and write about the scariest thing imaginable to you.

He's a good writer. Not a great writer but a good one. His diversity and imagination are two aspects that I really appreciate about him. He does have some insight into human nature but he's not on the level of any of the greats. Ie: Faulkner, Shakespear, Dostoevsky etc.
