YES-- one or TWO at the most (small goldfish) NO gravel on the bottom -- it makes a putrid mess cuz goldfish are sloppier than most fish ( I raised em for 20 years-- I love em but they are sloppy-- so I never had any gravel)
The top level of the water should be about 2 inches from the top of the bowl and put a sturdy screen on top of the bowl (get window screening, double it, and form it to the top of the bowl and secure it with a rubber band.
Water level needs to be 2" from the top because that dead space between the water and top of bowl is RICH in oxygen and goldfish could suffocate (literally) if there is too little airspace above their water.
Add a gently bubbling airstone with a valve that you can adjust so it doesn't make too many bubbles.
Tape a pretty picture to the back of the goldfish bowl so they get some idea of their boundaries (otherwise they could panic) and you could put a little cave on the bottom of the tank -- they make knock it over-- that's ok -- unless you think it will break the glass.
Clean the bowl twice a week. Use a turkey baster (use it only for the fish bowl (!!!!) to remove the poopies, and a paper towel to clean off the slime inside the bowl walls(wear rubber gloves) NEVER take out more than 1/3 of the water in the bowl at one time or the new water can suffocate the fish (I did that by mistake-- oh I felt so bad!!!!!)
And of course, feed em once or twice a day , and never overfeed - Tetra makes some GREAT flake food for goldfish.
And then -- ENJOY!!
PS-- they are not stupid.. get em used to seeing you and you will be able to wiggle a finger at em or speak gently and they will come over to your side of the bowl to "speak" to you.

It is possible but not recommended nor fair to the fish. You would live in a closet or in a very very small room too, but how long could you stand it ? It's the same thing here. Your fish would live there since it has no other choice, but it would not be happy. Assuming that a goldfish could live up to 20 years it would be very sad if the fish dies in 1, 2, or 5 years.
My opinion : if you can get a tank (with filtration and aeration) do so. Your fish would enjoy this, and you would enjoy this. If not, see if you can give your fish for adoption or to someone who is willing to better care for the fish.
If you decide to keep it, then change the water very very often (every 2 or 3 days partial water changes up to 50 % with the proper water conditioner), clean the bowl thoroughly of all the waste the fish produces and from uneaten food and try to be with your fish very very often, playing and keeping him company. Make its miserable situation as easy as it can get.
Tip : if you cannot afford a tank try something which could replace it like a large plastic or acrylic box. When you clean it, it sure makes a better home then the bowl. See if you could get a filter and/or an airpump too.

Goldfish grow very rapidly outgrowing the fishbowl they are placed in. They are a few inches when you get them but they can reach to a size of 6" to 1' long, depending on the breed.
Improper filtration and heat is the leading cause of goldfsh loss. You didn't have the same goldfish you started out with because Mom and Dad replaced the dead one with a live one.
One goldfish alone requires a 29-Gallon aquarium. Ifyou want multiple amounts, you have to add 10-Gallon per goldfish. Example: 1 = 29, 2 = 39, 3 = 49, etc.
Goldfish tend t produce more waste which in turn effects water quality. This can cause waste material to build up creating a toxic environment.

Fish bowls are bad for goldfish for three main reasons:
1.) Your fish will need a filter not only to keep the tank clean and looking nice, but also to prevent diseases. I have never seen a filter that works for a spheroid bowl (i assume that's what you meant?)
2.) Without an air pump, air has to be able to diffuse into the water from the surface. Spherical bowls have a lot more water than they do surface area, so your fish would run out of oxygen fairly quickly.
3.) Goldfish grow VERY quickly! Forget everything you've heard about them growing to the size of their tank, it isn't true! Assuming you found a way to keep your fish from getting diseases or suffocating, it wouldn't take it long to outgrow a bowl.
Another side issue is that goldfish do need light to thrive and most bowl have some weird diffraction patterns that don't allow enough in.

Bowls have been in all possibility the worst element to take place to puppy fish. a million. there's a finite quantity of oxygen in a bowl, as quickly because it somewhat is long previous, it somewhat is it. lots of folk be conscious that goldfish in bowls gasp on the exterior. it somewhat is via fact they're suffocating. 2. Goldfish are elementary for producing extra waste than different fish. In a small quantity with out filtration that waste builds up and makes for extremely detrimental water high quality which will poison the fish. They be stricken by ammonia burns and poisoning, and irrevocable gill injury. -The detrimental water high quality additionally stunts their enhance which shortens their lifespan. 3. Goldfish improve relatively large. Fancy goldfish improve 6-8 inches on a similar time as comets can improve over 12 inches. Stunting their enhance is inaccurate. they ought to have sufficient room to enhance and swim. 4. Comet goldfish can stay over 25 years while saved wisely. Bowled goldfish frequently make it an common of four years, hardly extra, frequently much less. Bettas should not be housed in bowls via fact they too might nicely be effected by detrimental water high quality. they're additionally tropical fish and could be saved with heating and filtration.

As a responsible fish keeper you must recognize that your common goldfish will never grow more then a couple of inches or live a couple of years, while in a proper home can live 20-30 years and grow to a foot long. Some people call it 'growing to their environment', but it's really called 'stunting' (of both size and lifespan).
As long as you don't mind this, then one can say they can be kept in a bowl for a while.

A friend of mine has two goldfish in a decent size bowl with just pebbles, two small plastic plants, and a small (but big enough to fit in one at a time) castle, with enough swimming room left over but the bowl is the biggest size she could fine since she has two fish. She does have to clean it often! She has had the same two for over a year now so I guess the answer is yes?

Goldfish, as in those stupid fish that you get from a fair game which has a tendancy of dieing a week later? Yes, they don't need that much room, you should be able to use a normal fish bowl for one, just remember since they don't have a filter you have to clean them regularly (like weekly if not more), or the water will get dirty and de-oxygenated, which means your fish will suffocate.
