It is a derogatory term used by small minded people.

I first saw the word "moonbat" in one of Ann Coulter's op-ed pieces. The implied definition was, "someone who has no idea how the world REALLY works."

Far leftists - people who oppose not only our involvement in Iraq but our involvement in Afghanistan. People who think that cancer rates are higher than 40 years ago not because people live longer thus are more apt to have cells that become cancerous but because "the FDA isn't telling us everything." People who honestly believe that there would be no Islamic terror groups if the US weren't involved in the Middle East, and who can't be convinced otherwise even though there is Islamic terrorist violence everywhere in the world, against governments that have no involvement in the Middle East and against other religions institutions such as Buddhist groups. People who think we're not being taxed enough. People who think PETA is a common-sense organization. People who have a 3rd graders view of the economy and think that there is more or less a fixed class system in the US and that to get money you have to take it from someone else. People who think Sheryl Crow had the right idea. People who think Ted Kaczinsky was well-intentioned but went just a tad too far. People who still believe the Monsanto butterfly story. People who still believe that under any recount scenario other than counting all double votes as Gore votes, Gore would have won the 2000 election but for the Supreme Court's involvement. People who still believe the October Surpise story.
Some of you believe that because it's what Paul Krugman or Thomas Oliphant told you but this is the information age - you're not excused.

Yes, I am wondering too.. Who's the conservative pundit that branded this term as the right-wing mantra to ridicule anyone considered liberal rather than showing them respect as a fellow American who loves their country?

A liberal moonbat is the opposite of a conservative moonbat.

No one really knows, it comes from the same school of "thought" as "nucular" ansd "misunderestimated" - presumably, it's a developmental stage when children invent their own language because they are not loved by anyone and want to feel special.

It's used to describe a leftist who is so dogmatic, and so hateful towards the right, as to be incapable of rational thought on any partizan issue.
See also 'Bush Derangement Syndrome.'
Whether any liberals actually warrant such description is a sepparate issue, of course.

It has no meaning, sweetie, it's just drool dribbling out of the mouths of rabid righties. Usually espoused when they get their butt kicked on some issue. Which is, like, most always.
