I want to be able to print photos that are up to and/or larger than 8.5 by 11 inches and I need to know what is the best printer within a reasonable price range for a college student, preferably something under $300 or $400.

My family and I have owned several Epson and HP printers and we have ALWAYS had problems with them.

Two years ago we started buying Canon printers and we love them. Great photos, no dried up ink or clogged print heads, cheaper and longer lasting ink - they are the best!! That is why the pros use them.

Look at the PIXMA line of printers - I'm not sure you are going to find anything in your price range though. You may have to go to $500 for the PIXMA Pro9000

Did you mean this to be 3 foot by 5 foot ? 3 inch by 5 inch is a comon print size that can be easily done on most printer and all photo processing shops. If you meant feet then for digital you need the largest file you can on your camera, you need it to be one of good exposure and focus and you need a program with good resampling algorythms like genuine fractals. For you regular you use an enlarger in a darkroom and the paper far enough from the enalarger to get the size print you want. Then you develop the paper. Custom labs and places like MPIX may be able to do these enlargements for you either digital or from negative. Now as to making it from an existing photo for digital scan it in with the highest resolution scanner you can. Note that any defects on the original print will still be there and with enlargements will be more noticible. If you want a film negative from a print the best way is to go to a custom lab and have them shoot it on a process camera, though you can shoot it yourself with a camera and copystand the results would not be as good for very large prints I hope this helps

I think the HP Photosmart Pro B8350 Photo Printer which costs about 350$ is a good choice. It can manage paper sizes up to 13 X 19".

Epson 1280 is awesome. It prints up to 13 X 19 inches. Sometimes they have specials on them and you can get one for about $250-300. I believe it is being replaced by a newer model sometime this year, though.
