If you have any firewall application installed on your computers, you have to go into that firewall configuration and enable access to the following ports.
139 TCP
445 TCP
137 UDP
138 UDP
If you do not have any firewall app installed but still have Windows Firewall turned on, then you have to disable the "Dont allow exceptions" checkbox in the General tab(if it is enabled) and then enable the "File and Printer Sharing" checkbox in the Exceptions tab.
This has to be done in all the computers.
Then share a particular directory on Computer1 and try to map that share on Computer2.
It is not necessary to join all the computers into a workgroup. Adding a computer to a workgroup is not always feasible in case where you have a work laptop which is part of some domain.

If you only have 1 LAN Port on your DSL MODEM, first you need to purchase a Switch or HUB (pref a Switch), the switch needs to be plugged from the Uplink port into the lan port on the DSLrouter, with that done any computer hooked to the swtich will have the DSL access, and be networkable...(be sure that all computers are on the same workgroup and are within the same IP Scheme (ex.192.168.1.1-254) which as long as all computers are on auto-obtain the router will Issue all of that information. 1 easy miss is most poeple forget to excempt File & Print Sharing in Windows Firewall. WIth that done the Computers are networked.... then you can do what the above poeple mentioned and can share files, printers etc....

If they are on a Seperate Connection, your best option is a VPN. It is far more secure then opening ports that anyone can connect to. Check out the Hamachi VPN. Goto Hamachi.cc . It is FREE and really to set up. This solution also works with computers in different locations

Go into the Control Panel and run the "Network wizard" on each of them. You want to join them all to a "workgroup". Make sure you use the same name for the workgroup on all the computer. Then you also want to turn on "file sharing". This will allow you to see the file on one computer from another.
Once set up, you click on the "My Network Places" on one computer, and it should show you any shared folders on the other computers.

You need to right click my computer on each machine and set them all to the same workgroup name. Then right click the folders you want to share and select sharing. The firewall needs the exception for file and printer sharing set. You should then be able to browse the network for the folders and files you want. You may need to set up additional users to each machine to control access to the files.

First you need to setup shares on them, just share a directory or so.
Second check the fire wall on these machines, I had to disable mine to get the share working.
Third Check the router and configure that it won't block traffic on your side of the network.
I think that is what you need.
