the same way brakes work on a bicycle. the disk is turning with your tire and when you put on the brakes the pads are squeezed against the disc to slow everything down.

when you push the break pedal, it sends brake fluide down the lines which then pushes the cylinder in the caliper which then pushes on the back brake pad causing the brake pads to push on the disk aka the brake rotor
