You can use pine bedding in your cage. I've seen people use it with no problem. With most any bedding you run the risk of mites. Corn cobs are more absorbant though.

I would recommend using a wire floor cage if your rabbit is not to large so that the wire will hurt it's feet. Wire floor cages keep your rabbit much cleaner than solid floor cages and by avoiding the bedding you have less of a chance of getting mites. Solid floors also allow coccidiosis to be spread more easily.

Normally, if a rabbit has a senior weight of 11 pounds or less then it can normally be kept on a wire floor. If it's senior weight is normally over 11 pounds then I recommend using a solid floor.

A wire bottomed floor is just easier to keep stains off your rabbit, reduce disease, make cleaning easier, and reduce the chance of getting fur mites and ear mites.

My only suggestion as far as pine bedding is that you don't use it for nestbox bedding. For nestbox bedding the only thing I recommend is straw. For nestbox bedding, you want little to no smell and you want something the mother can carry around in her mouth easily to build a nest.

Softwood shavings (cedar and possibly pine) irritate small animals' respiratory systems. This is bad enough in and of itself, but the odor causing phenols leach into the rabbit's bloodstream and can cause liver failure.

If you're looking for an inexpensive bedding, the wood pellets used in stoves are great. Very absorbent, odor free, and nearly dustless. I just picked up a 40 pound bag for $5 from the local farm supply store. Stuff like that is on clearance because the heating season is over.

i agree completely with K brew. I used pine for my rabbits up until about 3 weeks ago. I was going to suggest Aspen bedding instead. it is hypoallergenic, and completely safe, and absorbs VERY VERY well! This is the only reason i switched, and my rabbits cages stunk so much before, i found that the pine didnt get rid of any odor, where as the aspen works WONDERS! i used to have to put my rabbits in the bathroom because they stank so badly, and now they have been in my room every since i switched to Aspen. I used to get the HUGE thing of pine shavings from walmart for about 7 dollars, and now i only pay about 9 or 10 for the Aspen at Tractor supply (same size as pine). Just wanted to add some personal experience :)

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/FHG7W
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

I tend to stay away from all wood bedding, due to the fact that it often irritates the respiratory systems of small animals, and can harvest mites (they hide in wood).

I adore corn cob bedding. Never used Carefresh, but apparently, it's highly liked, as well.

''Yesterday's News'' is also a common bedding preference for rabbits.

Wood shavings don't help with odors, and can get nasty, real quick.

I wouldn't. Pine and cedar bedding can cause a whole lot of health problems in small pets. I wouldn't take that chance with one I love.

rabbits prefer a bedding made of herbage. wood is not natural nesting material for them.
