a coral snake,even though we have them here in North Carolina also

Sounds like a coral snake but remember with the colors: "if red touches yellow, he's a good fellow but if red touched black, you'd better stay back" as they are poisonous.

It could be a Sonora Ground snake. Take a look at the second picture in the set to see if it matches the snake you saw.
