I know, I know. Everybody's opinions are going to be different, but I want to know what everybody's opinion on this would be. What is the best miscellaneous freshwater creature for an aquarium? I'm talking about crabs, shrimp, frogs, snails, etc.

I have a 55 gallon and was just looking at something compatible with my neons, zebras, betta, and dwarf gourami.

What's your opinion?

How many of each should I get?

Crabs (fiddler and red claw/Thai) wouldn't be good choices, because they need more brackish water conditions and a way to get completely out of the water, even though stores sell them as freshwater - they're also good escape artists.

African dwarf frogs shouldn't be kept in water more than a foot deep, or the have difficulty surfacing to breathe. African clawed frogs get around 5" and eat fish.

Shrimp are great additions - some are very colorful, they're peaceful, some help rid your tank of algae.

There are good and bad with snails. Mystery and apple snails are good additions. I like Malaysian trumpet snails as well, but others don't. These are a small, nocturnal snail that spends the day in the gravel eating the stuff other animals don't get. But if there's an abundant food source, they multiply like crazy (just lets you know your tank needs more frequent cleaning, or you're overfeeding the fish IMO).

I'll put some links with info about these critters below.

ADDITION: It's impossible to say how many of each you could keep, since this will depend on the number and size of the fish you already have in the tank, how good your filter system is, and how well you do at keeping up with cleaning and water changes. Just remember that the inverts also add to the tank bioload just like fish do, so you don't want so many that your tank is overstocked.

I would suggest getting just a few snails and maybe 5 shrimp if you have the room. Most animals will grow larger than what they are when you buy them, so see how large the species you like will grow before adding many more. And also consider that most will reproduce in the tank.

Shrimp are great for cleaning up extra flake and are interesting to watch. African dwarf frogs are also entertaining and good with community fish. Snails are great if you have an algae problem or want a larger snail like a mystery snail for wondering color. I do not suggest crabs because the can nip or kill small fish and they need a place to get out of the water. In a 55 gal you could easily do all three of the fore mentioned creatures and in numbers. Good Luck!

Snails rule! Snails are very interesting to watch and they help clean the tank of food and sometimes even detritus and algae in some cases. The only problem with snails is that they can multiply quickly. I would get a mystery snail and a Japanese trapdoor snail. Snails may eat live plants. Snails are very hardy and will not get damaged by the Dwarf Gourami.

The objective of the game is to develop the ability to hit the little ball back well with your bat. At first it may seem a little difficult to handle because it varies a lot with your mouse’s sensitivity, but don’t worry, with just a little practice you can become an expert in this type of game.

For your tank I would suggest shrimp. You don't list any bottom dwelling fish, so they would basically be out of each others way and the shrimp would provide the service of cleaning the uneaten food from the bottom of the tank. Besides, they are fairly active and fun to watch.

I love crawfish, but if they're wild-caught, they AREN'T going to be compatible with your fish (trial & error, is the way I found out.)

Ghost shrimp are pretty neat tank companions, too. So are crabs (I'm actually more infatuated with the crabs, than fish).

I would suggest you get some freshwater plants and add some crayfish to clean up the mess that your fish makes.

Dwarf Cichlids are cool, but I also really like Oscars, if you get a ping pong ball and the Oscars are big enough they will bat it around all day
