A helping hand. Lending an ear is just taking the time to hear out an individuals problems. A smile takes the least effort, because if it is genuine, someone else caused it to happen. A helping hand, on the other hand, requires you to compromise something that is yours, like time or money, to benefit another, which takes the most effort and risk on your part.

A lending ear. A helping hand is an action which benefits all involved and a genuine smile is something which comes naturally! A lending ear however is typically something which one must force themselves to do/make available.

"Sometime in your life, hope that you might see one starved man, the look on his face when the bread finally arrives. Hope that you might have baked it or bought or even kneaded it yourself. For that look on his face, for your meeting his eyes across a piece of bread, you might be willing to lose a lot, or suffer a lot, or die a little, even." ~Daniel Berrigan

I used to find it most difficult to lend a helping hand in one-to-one situations as I never want to hurt a fellow human being's pride or sense of self worth. Then I became immobilized from illness and I soon learned how hard it is to ASK for help. Over the last several years, I have discovered that there are many people, formerly like me, who don't want to hurt another's feelings.

Don't worry. Ask anyway. If a person doesn't need your help, they will tell you. My guess is that you will be rewarded with a genuine smile and a new friend who will lend an ear whenever you need it.

usually a genuine smile. people are more found of drama than you think. they would love to help you when you're down (mainly because they enjoy a good story of a failure that's not theirs... so helping hand and lending ear go together on this), but they don't really enjoy to see someone happier than them. it's not neccessary jealousy, most of the times is just a feeling of their personal insucces that remind them of their limitations. I even tested that here... I used to be unhappy and my mind was filled with what I called "suicidal questions", not questions about me, but dark questions in general. And I had a huge series of followers. When my questions became lighter and I started to express openly the fact that someone has made me happy recently, I remained only with the best friends and some people even started to stalk me... Oh well, I guess I have to deal with it and move over...

I think that the most difficult to give is an ear because we too often have ear censors that prevent us from truly listening to other individuals. We are so often quick to respond, interrupt, or override. Giving a helping hand or a smile really takes less effort than listening to someone, who more often than not is saying something, you don't agree with, is boring, or taking too long to get across.

A helping "hand" as in physical help, could have restrictions on the person wanting to help. But the sincere listener, the genuine smile, never.

I try but communication is so complex with words....

I genuine smile is by far the most fluent form I can harness...
the lines on my face would agree...

A helping hand is rarely miss understood by the recipient......

words....ah words....noisy brains and context..........

A genuine smile. A normal smile is easy to give, but smiling genuinely in this world where there's war and famine is hard to do sometimes.
