Hi Julie,

It is just as simple as right clicking on the printer, click sharing and letting the wizard do its job for files and printer sharing. If you get a little box that says ignore, tick it and click next.

If you have done it right a little bar will appear under the icon for the printer with a little hand as well.

you need to share the printer on the one machine, and then add a network printer on the other.

The risk of this is that if you enable sharing on your computer that is attached to the internet then it becomes easier for someone to hack into your system.

I would recommend that you spend a few $ and get a wireless router. This will have a firewall and can make your computers much more secure. Also you will not need to have your desktop on all the time to access the internet from your laptop.

You could also get a Ethernet print server. (Make sure you get the right type for your printer - USB or parallel) This will mean that you do not need to have your desktop on to access the printer from your laptop.

I assume you have a wireless router and a home network.

Providing security encryption is set up correctly then you should go ahead and use the printer wizard.

The danger would be if you had no security set up on your wireless router anyone within range could theoretically access your network.
