I think the point of them never telling which state the Simpsons live in is because the Simpsons could be any family from any town in the US. Springfield was an excellent choice for the town they live in because every state in the union has a Springfield, adding to the universality of the Simpson family.

no one knows, and frankly there are too many things around that town that aren't usually found in one place: the Gorge, the wastelands, mountains, ocean, etc., not to mention the actual 4 seasons they have.
Sorry guys, the ocean alone rules out Illinois (And Springfield, IL, is nowhere near the Great Lakes)
