Drugs don't solve mental health issues. To restore the mind to natural harmony and health it needs nutrition, herbalism, nurturing, sympathy and love. Not chemicals, condescension, segregation and pigeonholing. Music and nature can be very healing. There are other ways. There's a place in Brazil that is curing people of mental illness with Shamanism. There's a place in Australia that's curing people of addiction with meditation.

Anti-psychotic medication causes many illnesses. It may suppress symptoms but it doesn't cure. Breath-control, yoga, meditation and positive thinking all help to bring the energies of the mind into equilibrium and harmony. Mental health is not conformity of thought. It's common to be eccentric and be mentally healthy

I think in many cases yes.

On the other hand I think drugs are teh cause to some mental health issues. LOL.

Drugs can certainly help the mentally ill. That along with therapy and counseling are the solution to most mental health issues. Some there isn't a solution for.

Take time to understand that there ARE TWO TYPES of mental issues.
Severe mental illnesses such as bipolar or schitzophrenia are a disease, no different from something like diabetes. They are a malfunction of the brain itself, and require continued medication. Drugs do NOT cure them, any more than insulin cures diabetes. Would you expect a diabetic to stop taking meds, or see them as "weak" to need them?
The other type of mental disorders are not physically based, but come from thinking patterns or experiences. These can be "adjusted" using therapy, reteaching, etc. For these, some medications help with symptoms until the person works through the issues. Obviously, there are Drs. who use medication without even trying to deal with problems.
Sadly.. much of the population does NOT realize anything about the first category, and won't, unless they or a family member/ friend experience it.

Drugs are not always the best route to take when it comes to certain matters of mental health issues as some prescribed drugs can be very addictive and aren't meant for long time use so it's important that the person who has the problems to still see a counsellor or a pshchologist.Alternative/natural medicines can certainly work, but I would recommend that before deciding to take any alternative/natural medicine that you still see some one who specialises in that field of alternative/natural medicines as they can cause side effects to just the same as prescribed medicines, for instance taking Kava kava for long periods can cause liver damage, reversible conditions as anaesthesia of the mouth nd should not be taken if a person has an allergy to black pepper.Valerian can cause liver damage,a fast heart rate and drowsiness.Passion which is especially good for anxiety can on a very rare occasion can cause things such as gastrointestinal discomfort but on the other hand can be used combined with pressured medicine very well.

If someone has a mental disease that is caused by brain chemistry being 'off', then medication is definitely needed to help with symptoms so the person can live a healthier, more comfortable life.
There is NO cure for mental illness. Medication is used to help with the symptoms of the disease.

I tried 5-HTP and I have tried St John's Wort in the past for depression but they did not do anything as far as I could tell except the HTP helped me sleep very well. I had a herbal preparation for panic attacks years ago which didn't do anything. I have tried various antidepressants from the doctor over the years and the only one that has worked was Citalopram which I could rave about. I am all for alternative medicines but they didn't help me.

99% of the time I believe drugs actually make mental illness worse. Even when they do not, they often serve only to ameliorate the symptoms of mental illness. I have never heard of a case where someone was cured of mental illness through using drugs.

for a short term solution drugs do help, but the long term effects are bad. if someone is placed on drugs for any medical purpose, and they are on it for months on end, they can become dependant on them and will find it difficult to let go of not having those drugs. lash backs will be worse then before they started taking them.

Better understanding of whats the problems are the answer. Psyche meds work but in my opinion are needed for a short amount of time till patient is in control. Than dr will say he needs it for the rest of his life proving dr's only really are 75% effective and need to further their understanding of the problem.
