Hi Macky.

It's getting a little late in the year to re-seed, especially with the very warm weather we have had here in the South of the UK. However all is not without hope.

If it isn't too large an area, then give it a good stiff rake over with a spring tined rake (the sprung steel type) to get some of that moss out. Don't cut your grass too short as this can only encourage your moss.

Then if it were up to me I'd use a good "lawn weed n feed" product (look for 24D as an active ingredient). Spread the granules across the lawn as per the instructions on the box, and continue this throughout the summer. This should take care of the perennial weeds and moss for you.

While you're watching your weedkiller grow your weeds to death, with the growth hormone in the granules, you can borrow a good book on lawn care from your local library and draw up plans for your Autumn campaign! Hessayon does a great book on lawn care. You can pick it up for peanuts on Amazon. This one was a penny:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B0000CO77Y/ref=dp_olp_2/026-3198724-0994000?ie=UTF8&qid=1178562043&sr=8-4

In the Autumn, rake it again and hopefully it should be clear enough of weeds for a re-seeding this time. That should do the trick. The key thing in the Autumn is to make sure that the soil is warm enough and moist enough for good seed germination. So the end of the summer, in to the autumn should be the peek time.

Hope you have every success. Be patient and plan your strategy over many cups of tea/coffee. You'll do it.

weed and feed your lawn NOW as we are having some vitally required rain that will help kill the weeds and moss then after some time(see weed and feed instructions) rake the lawn (dethatching) use a metal tyned normally called a leaf rake all over which should get rid of the worst of the moss and the weeds should die accordingly treatment on a regular basis is best and a lovely green lawn will be yours in no time the idea of aquiring d.j. hesayans books is a good one too he is a majician when it comes to gardening advice the books are brillliant!!
good luck mack!!

It will be hard work.
FOR LAWNS:
Remove entire lawn and re-seed or sod appropriately.
Check PH balance of the top soil before you re-seed etc.
Adjust soil as needed per grass type.

FOR GARDENS:
First carefully spray all the weeds/plants you want gone with liquid herbicide from your local garden store. Careful not to spray nearby plants you want to keep. Wait a day or so untill they start looking weak...possibly browning.

Then take your gardening tools and start digging out the weeds by the roots. Make sure you get the roots out.
Forks, spades, and shovel work best. Bag the weeds and place them for trash cleanup by the curb.

Buy some Garden Food fertilizer and give the remaining plants you love some nourishment and love.

Treat it with a selective weedkiller followed 2 weeks later with a moss killer. It will look very patchy when the moss and weeds are gone, so feed it with lawn fertiliser then. It is better to let the grass re-grow than to re-seed it as you may not achieve the right mix of seed.

Just a starter set.

Mow the lawn really low.
Thatch the lawn.
Put on a fertilizer with moss killer (probably a week after thatching)
Two weeks later put down fertilizer with week control.
Spray a wide leaf and clover killer over the top of the lawn.

Continue to water and fertilize through the summer.

In the fall- aerate the lawn
put 100lbs. of sand per 1000sq. ft. (helps drainage)
Put down 100lbs. of lime per 1000sq. ft. (during a rainy period-needs a lot of rain to soak in)

And as a rule of thumb. mow low when its cold, but mow only to two inches when it is hot (this allows the grass to shade the soil from getting to hot and dry, also keeps the roots deeper).

Good luck. it really is a year long, year after year process.

Cut the lawn to the lowest what your mower will go to and treat the lawn with moss killer and after three days rake the dead moss out.

any of the available weed and feed products for lawns will do the work for you. evenly spread over the lawn as per instructions and not only will the grass improve but the moss and weeds will die.

First of all, go cut everything down as low as possible, then shove a load of weed killer over it. Otherwise get some gardeners in to sort it for you.
