When we flew into Gatwick we took the Gatwick Express into Victoria station. I highly recommend this! If your planning on staying around London you shouldn't need a car. There public transportation system is great and easy to use.

You are at the mercy of traffic, so that's like "how long is a piece of string"
Don't go by car. Get the train from Victoria (or Clapham Junction, or East Croydon).

Allow two hours. The traffic can be a nightmare.

it's about half an hour by car, Heathrow is much better and closer
