no harm, but you should set the power settting to go to sleep mode after a predetermined amount of time that you haven't used it, like 15-30 minutes, this way your using less energy than a light bulb. Otherwise it can suck a lot of energy to keep it running for no reason. Fact is computers run better when kept running. And rebooting every week or so to clear the memory.

it's not a question of right, it's a question of convenience.

You should protect your computer with a surge strip or better yet a UPS battery backup. (Everyone should do this.....)

There is no need to turn it off unless you have issues with energy consumption. Modern computers are all energy star compliant just like your fridge, hot water heater, etc.... and you don't turn those off when you aren't using them! lolololhehehehe

One important point I would like to make about turning computers off.

If you sleep in the same toom with your computer, I understand why you would turn it off. If not, it's important to know that if you have automatic updates turned ON, and you have an always on internet connection, it gets it updates at 3:00am (default), and reboots if necessary.

Also, XP performs system maintenance when the machine is idle. It deletes unused prefetch files, rewrites the drive layout file, and optimizes as necessary.

Theoretically, you need to turn your computing device off periodically. some courses have a illness called "memory leak"; they mark a portion of memory as used even nevertheless they don't probable use it. So that is available for memory leaks to acquire and decelerate your computing device. This stated, there is reasons to maintain the computing device on in a single day. you may set it as much as accomplish maintenance initiatives (including downloading application updates, scanning for malware, or defragmenting the not easypersistent) for the duration of the nighttime.

Electronics in the home consume electricity when not being used, more and more. HDTVs, consumer electronics, game systems, and PCs all are consuming power when on our even is a "standby" state. You will save power by turning off you PC for the night, but I would not turn it off for 1 hour of inactivity.

If you are not using it for the night, then it is not a bad idea to turn it off. If you configure your power save settings to turn off the monitors and spin down the hard drives when not in use, then if you don't come back within the hour, it will be in a low power mode already.

Neither! And both. If you have an always on service with the WEB well don't leave your doors hanging open! But other than that, it does no harm to leave the system running. The power use of the machine is less then the big old boob tube
