If you do very frequent water changes (once every 3-5 days) you can put a betta in the tank. All the bubbles are doing is putting oxygen into the water. A filter takes the fish's waste out of the water and all the other biproducts that go with it. Another reason you couldnt do any other fish is becasue this is most likely a small tank with no heater. All tropical fish need a heater (even bettas technically, they have ajusted to living without one though). Good Luck!

Filters are a real benefit if you want a clean tank. They can help you remove bad chemicals from your water, because of the fact that the filter cartidges use carbon rocks. Also you can buy ammonia rock which help your water be ammonia free. A filter keeps your water moving, and stops this whitish layer from producing at the top of your tank. Your Fish will also probably feel more comfortable with cleaner water. The pump with air is good too. I recommend that you buy the filter. Although if you have a small 1 gallon tank (3.6 liters) you don't need a filter.

If you are able to buy a Filter, I recommend that you go easy on changing the Filter Cartridges. Don't Change them To Often or you will Kill good bacteria inside of your tank.

Heres A small checklist for you to buy:
>>> Carbon Rocks (Little Black rocks that come in something like a milk carton)
>>> Ammonia Absorbing Rocks (Little Rocks that are white / teal / and black.)
>> The size of your Filter should go accordingly with the size of your tank.
+ 10 gallon tank A small Filter (Single cartridge)
+ 20 gallon Tank a large filter (Double Cartridge)
>> And finally if you don't have, Water conditioner.
When you buy the filter and you put the carbon in the filter, Put the filter under the water faucet for about 30 seconds, so that the excess carbon dust can come off.

Good Luck!! PLZ PIK ME AS BEST ANSWR!!

A filter is not for air circulation but for helping clean the crap out of the tank actually. It collects the junk that would float and /or settle on the bottom of the tank. It helps eliminate or reduce excess waste in there then. Try one. a corner one is easy enough to put in and change then as needed. If one doesn't have any try having a lot of bottom feeder fish then to really get the excess waste and food off the tank floor. IF one has more than a fish and more than 2 gallons the filter is useful.

Yes! It will not only clean the water but circulate and aerate it too. All tanks should have one, and if your tank isn't big enough for a filter it isn't big enough for fish. Shop around because there's some good deals. Easiest is an internal filter but make sure you get the right size for your tank.
Edit: With regard to another answer, NEVER clean everything in your tank at the same time, you'll remove all the beneficial bacteria and your fish will quickly become ill.

You have an air pump, which, depending on the type, could already be oxygenating and starting a little filtration. It depends on what fish you are keeping, but most prefer a filter which cleans up most of the bad things in the water, you will prbably be okay though, especially with goldfish, as they can survive outdoors, with unfiltered ponds. You should let the tank build up a lot of bacteria first.

a should have a filter on yes. this is because a filter will help eliminate any bad bacteria and help keep the tank water filtered and kept clean and healthy for the fish.

if you decide not to have a filter regular water changes are required 25% 3 times a week at least, this is because if the fish that you are goldfish they produce a lot of waste which eventually in time if not sorted out turns to Ammonia.

Ammonia is fatal to any fish if in large amounts and will kill the fish if kept in these conditions.

the air stone is still required in the tank as this will help with producing high levels of oxygen which is vital to all fish, but this air stone is not sufficient to support a tank which fish living healthy and happy.

hope this helps you.

Yes they do.

Your pump is just putting oxygen in the water, but it's not filtering anything out.

Every tank with every kind of fish needs a filter, unless you want to put a LOT of extra time into your tank. I would recommend the BioWheel filter. Mine is doing a great job.

No, a tank dies nopt have to have a filter, but without one you will need to do waterchanges daily of about 50% of the tank volume. The air stone will help keep the water moving, which provides aeration at the surface, but will not help prevent the build up of ammonia from the fish waste like a filter would.

A pupm doesn't have a fliter cartridge which catches the extra food and waste that infests your water.

You must have a filter with carbon filter catridges or you will have a very dirty tank all of the time.
