It's important to include what kind of fish you have. If you can add that information we can certainly help you.

It's really going to be needed to know what the breed of the fish is, a picture would help, or doing a web search on breeds usually shows picutres of them, you could do a look up from there. I have quite an assortment of fish and have had fish from back when I was 15. Alot has changed in the years. I am trying to breed my Gourami at the moment, and in the case of Gourami, a female is noted as having a very wide belly region, and the males are more slimline, as well as having a much longer pointed dorsal fin vs the female having a shorter and rounder dorsal fin. Each breeds have thier unique features. Being round isn't necessarily a sign of being pregnant. Some fish are live bearers, some are egg layers, some are mouth brooders, and others are bubblenest builders. We will definetly need some help knowing what breed you have.

If it is a goldfish, the odds are against it being pregnant. If you have a breeding pair of goldfish, the male develops many skin colored dimples on the gill covers when he is conditioned. If the fish that isn't fat is exibiting this, at least you know you may have a pair.

Chances are the fish has one of two possible problems. Could be an intestinal blockage (constipation) which would require lots of greens added to the diet such as husked peas.

Or, it has the beginning symptoms of an internal bacterial infection (you will see this referred to as dropsy often times, but the term dropsy seems to encompass any number of internal bacterial infections). A tell tale sign of this is if the scales begin to pop out or distend. If this is the case, the first thing to do is a partial water change; it is always a good idea. Then test the water for Ammonia and Nitirite either with a store bought test kit or your local aquarium store will do this for you free of charge usually. If water is good, add 1 tablespoon of uniodized salt (either Kosher salt or aquarium specific salt) per gallon of water to help reduce bloating by osmotic imbalance and then treat with Freshwater Maracyn 2 (by Mardel labs) according to directions on box.

Usually if the fish is pregant you wil notice that the belly of the fish is a reddish color, try looking at the fish thru the light. If the fish is calm, and sits near the bottom of the tank he probably is pregnant and you should buy a breeding tank, so that when the fish babies are born, they aren't eaten by the other fish. These little tanks go inside of your normal tank. If you buy swordtails, or mollies you are very likely to have baby fish.

I can always tell my guppies are pregant by looking at their gravid spot, it's the spot located under the belly and they appear black. The blackness you are seeing are the fry's eyes. Other signs of fish being pregant are they dont eat very much. Females will also tend to want to be left alone and not bothered by the males. They may hide by the heater or just hang out around the sides of the tank. Also you could just be feeding your fish too much.

First, you need to know what type of fish it is, then decide the sex of both fish.
