Lord Browne was not sacked, he resigned, and not for being gay but for lying to a judge in court.
It was BP though.

Lord Browne was not sacked from BP, he resigned. He was due to retire in July anyway. He chose to resign to avoid any embarrasment to the Company after details of his private life were splashed all over the tabloids.
He had a tremendous career with BP spanning 41 years, starting as an apprentice and rising steadily through the ranks to become the Chief Executive. He was/is a highly thought of business leader and did more for BP than any one before him, turning a small British company into a major player. I am sure he will be sorely missed.

Although his homosexuality played a part in his downfall, he wasn't by any stretch of the imagination "fired for being gay". For a start, he resigned, but also his crime was not being gay as such, but lying under oath to a court about his relationship.
And the answer of course is BP.

1. The company was BP
2. He resigned, he wasn't sacked.
3. He resigned because he committed perjury (lying in court)
The lies happened to be about his private life, but he certainly wasn't sacked for being gay.

British Petroleum. He was the CEO responsible for turning BP into one of the major energy producers on the world market. He was scheduled to resign in July of next year, but stepped down due to the publication of his private life due to accusations made by his partner about his use of BP resources.
Here's the letter I was looking for from John Browne
As you will now be aware, I have today resigned from BP following publicity about my private life.
Over the past 41 years, I have been privileged to work alongside some of the most talented people of the corporate world, who have contributed to the global success of BP.
Throughout my career at BP, I have kept my public life separate from my private life. But Associated Newspapers, publishers of the Daily Mail, the London Evening Standard and the Mail on Sunday, has opted to disclose private information about my four year relationship with my former partner Jeff Chevalier. Regrettably, Mr Chevalier has provided the newspapers with an account of our time together.
Documents have been disclosed containing allegations about my personal life and about use of BP facilities for Mr Chevalier’s benefit, and other matters. Mr Chevalier’s allegations are full of misleading and erroneous claims and in particular I deny categorically any allegations of improper conduct relating to BP. At my request, those allegations were examined by BP, and the Board has cleared me of any wrongdoing.
These allegations will inevitably result in considerable media attention for myself and BP. My decision to stand down is intended to save the company from unnecessary embarrassment and distraction.
My departure will enable the management team led by Tony Hayward to focus on the real challenges ahead, ensuring a smooth transition to the next phase of BP’s growth.
I have spent my entire working life at this company and, over the years, I have been fortunate to meet many of you as we built BP. Almost 100,000 people have worked tirelessly to drive this enterprise, creating a workforce envied around the world for its dedication and first-class treatment of suppliers, corporate partners, retailers, customers, shareholders and ultimately each other.
As I step down, I want to thank everybody for their loyalty, dedication and drive that have and will continue to make BP a great company. I will miss you all.
John Browne
