I think the first guy has the right answer. I can't rate votes for some reason, but that's my two cents.

The second guy is imagining that the door is larger than the opening and one of the other people is imagining that the new door is less wide than the opening instead of it being shorter than the opening.

You may have to remove the trim around the door so that you can use shims to shim the jam out to the door. You want a very small but uniform gap between the door edge and it's jam. Door shim stock is available at any home improvent store. It is used between the jam and the rough opening when finish nailing the jam into the rough opening. Sounds like this was not done properly at installation. Too tight and the door will drag, too loose or out of square and the door is not sealing good. good luck,

You will need to build down with lumber, I suggest using a 2x4 and a 1x4 stacked. If you use two 2x4's you won't have the room for leveling. When the door is installed use a wider casing trim to cover all the old paint lines. Good luck

What you'll end up with is 1.5" on each side. What you can do is use wood blocks or shims to gap the space in a few places so you can screw the new door into place. Then stuff the opening with insulation, and last, use moulding pieces to gap the opening and give you a finished look.

2x4s are 1.5 inches thick. Put two of them at the top and that will make the opening 34x80.
