My adult dwarf platy started getting bloated a few days ago. This morning when I fed my fish I noticed my fish looked like a porcupine. The fish is even more bloated today and all of its scales are sticking straight out, reminding me of a porcupine. What is wrong with it? Is it curable? Is the fish contagious, should I remove it from the tank? I have another dwarf platy and ~20 fry in a tank with my “porcupine fish”.

Thanks for any info.

It is certainly not pregnant. As nunya says, your fish has drospy which is 100% fatal if not treated and at least 95% fatal even if treated once it has gotten to this stage. Many of the infections that cause dropsy will become very contagious if the fish dies in the tank so I would recommend you remove the fish from the tank asap.

Your fish has dropsy. Its a baterial infection. It can be treated sometimes (not likely in your case, sorry ) and it is contagious under the right conditions (if your other fish pick at it once it has died). Here is a good website for explanation and treatment.

Water changes are a must. This is normally seen in aquariums with high nitrates. Good Luck!

Well it could be pregnant or it could have a fatal disease that you cannot cure. If you say its scales are sticking up like a porcupine it is probably not pregnant but very ill. I'm sorry. Either wait for babies or for a floating fish... Please confine the fish for now so no more are infected if it is ill!!!

It has dropsy, which is usually fatal. It in itself is not a disease but is a symptom so its not contagious but whatever is causing it could be, usually it's not though. You can try treating it but like I said it is usually fatal especially once it is as bloated as you say.

You should have asked the fish store about it's toxin before you purchased it.
