I can specifically remember learning about an experiment that involved infants crawling between two tables that had a clear bridge between them. The purpose was to determine if the infants could sense the danger and if they would avoid the possibility of falling. I would like the correct answer based on the pshychological theory and experiment, not just an opinion - thanks!

Please, I am looking for an actual scientific answer! Not an opinion.

I don't think there is a pat answer. Every child is different. I think the experiment you were describing was more about the ability to perceive depth.

I know that this is not the scientific answer you're looking for, but I remember reading that it's not until the age of ten that a child can understand that even though they can see a car coming, that the driver in the car may not see them.

And there is lots of scientific evidence that the human brain is not fully developed until the early 20's and that the parts of the brain that develop last are the ones that recognize danger, mortality, long term consequences, that kind of thing.

Good luck on your research.

An infant will crawl across a "glass" , seeming to be over a long drop. Suddenly, a few months later, no chance! Not even at Mother's coaching!

I remember the experiment you are talking about. Too bad I didn't keep my Psych texts. I believe that happens about 5 to 6 months of age.

I think it depends on the environment. At a very young age, I developed that concept quickly. I remember being a kid and litterally constantly thinking as I walked to school or across the street, what if I get hit by a car? or what if I get kidnapped and/or raped?

well, if a child does learn it, they soon forget when they become teens, then learn it again around the age of 20 or 30.
