Should I tamper the sand after I added it to level the yard for an above ground pool? It's very lumpy & uneven

Absolutely. This will even it out and compact it. Otherwise it could settle at a later time, after you've put the pool on top of it. Then your pool would no longer be level.

Yes, tamp it and then lightly water it so it packs even more. A suggestion...put a material such as roofing felt under a layer of sand before placing the pool on it. Extend it past the edges a foot or so. This will stop weeds from growing through the bottom of the liner. You can cover the edges with stone for looks.

Yes, a mechanical tamper is faster and more effective. Prepared to be tired. You can rent these machines from Home Depot, Lowes, or other tool rental companies.
