Ratios are the 'sharing' of a large quantity in a particular way.

In your example £35 to be shared in relationship 4:3

Therefore the total number of parts is 4 + 3 = 7

one share is 4 x {35/7}
the other is 3 x [35/7}

if a and b are the 2 parts of 35, then
a/b = 4/3 and a+b = 35. Sinces 4/3 is a simplified ratio, let's unsimplify it by putting back whatever factor was cancelled out during simplification:

a/b = 4x / 3x, so
4x + 3x = 35
7x = 35
x = 5 ............ the cancelled factor, thus

a = 4x = 4(5) = 20
b = 3x = 3(5) = 15

Once you understand, you just look at the problem and think, "4+3 = 7, 7 goes into 35 5 times, 4 times 5 is 20, 3 times 5 is 15." With just a bit of practice, you don't even think the words.

For the ration 4:3, you have 7 units (4+3)
Use ratios to split the 35

4/7(35) = 20
3/7(35) = 15

4:3

4+3 = 7 - Add the ratios

£35/7 = £5 - Divide the total amount by the sum of the ratios

Of the ratio 4:3, multiply £5 to both of them.

Therefore = £20:£15

And if you realise, £20 + £15 = £35.
