You can work in the music industry without singing, I think learning how some of it works behind the scenes would be helpful.
Trying to get jobs that involve singing and doing a lot of auditions. Getting a legit vocal coach. Going through songs that best suit and highlight your voice (just like on American Idol). Playing an instrument and reading music.
Get a decent recorded demo made, about 4 to 6 songs that you think are the best songs you can sing, and write an original or 2.
If you can get paid session work, great. You're in the music business. Most of the backup singers for well known acts were just people who played nightclubs that someone from a record company happened to be at.
You don't have to leave your hometown to get discovered but you may have to go to the major cities to audition from time to time.
American Idol has rejected a lot of great singers in auditions, it's more about overall package and potential, as well as certain things they have in mind for that year. I don't think it's the best place to learn from but Randy is the typical A&R type you will run into. I don't think the show is the best place to get famous but it does give you the "Fast track" into being noticed and put on your resume.
Normally record companies never reject you to your face. Some demos are never heard if the presentation doesn't stand out. Also realize there are better than you that never make it, so hard work may take a long time to pay off if at all.
If you can't handle rejection and bounce back time and time again, it won't work out.

My 21-year-old daughter is a semi-professional singer. She started lessons at 4 (a bit late). She makes about $1000 a week from her singing and piano playing.
Here's what happened to 99% of the people she knows in the music business.
1/ Get singing lessons.
2/ Enter competitions
3/ Join a musical society
4/ Take MORE lessons
5/ Fail
6/ Accept that you are one of a million kids your age who do not want to work but you are going to have to.

Get your opinion that you can sing independently verified.
I haven't heard you sing. I'm not directing this at you. But when you watch the audition shows for American Idol and listen to some of those people who said they could sing, I'd get someone that doesn't know me to listen to me, and tell me if they thought I could sing or not.
To me, that's the VERY first thing you do.
If you find out that you can't sing, don't worry. Find another way to make yourself marketable, and you can still have a career in the music business. Just ask Justin Timberlake.

Locate a recording studio in your area and record a demo usually 5 or 6 songs and/or place an ad in music mags such as METAL EDGE or whatever genre you sing. If you go to church start there and sing on the stage to help with stage fright and get used to singing in front of people.

Work at it fairly difficult. To take Eminem as an instance. He thinks just about consistently of phrases and rhymes and he has entire bins of papers with lyric strategies. Learn the right way to advertise your self. Get your song in the market. If you adopted the prior recommendation, your song is more often than not going to be well, so folks will love it after they listen it. Don't stop!!! This is probably the important factor you'll be able to do. If you fairly desire it, then simply do not quit doing it. I wish you'll be able to make it :)

Girl, talent is not necessary in the music business. But, if you think you're good, get an agent. Look at Stage magazine or any magazine for singers/actors etc. See if you can find a good agent.
Before that, do some gigs, it will look good on your resume.
Approach pubs, clubs, hotels and offer to sing.....Good luck

Find a studio and see if they will help you make a cd. That's the first step. Also, look for local bars that have competitions and go and sing! Have fun.

Just because you think you can sing, doesnt mean you really can. (think american idol's worst singers). Go to an agency of some sort and they will tell if you really have talent. If you do, then good luck!
