I just bought two new corys and they are sitting in the bag floating in my tank waiting for release..one is spunky and swimming around..the other is clamped and pretty motionless unless I move the bag. I think there is a little white around his mouth..what should I do?

They are in the tank and seem to be doing fine..I am starting a melafix treatment just in case..I know melafix isn't all that wonderful and is a mild antibiotic but hopefully if it has mouth fungus it will get rid of it and protect the other fish.

The white stuff around the mouth is gone already, there doesn't seem to be any irritation around the area it was on. It isn't eating yet and looks kind of puny compaired to the other cory, which is already picking at the bottom and having a blast apparently. Otherwise, it's swimming around the tank fine and doesn't seem stressed.

To be totally honest the fish should never have been released into the tank. It is exactly these situations that quarantine tanks are so good at preventing.

Now that the tank is at risk, I would suggest you attack the problem aggressively. You need to look closely at the white area around the corys mouth. If it is in anyway fuzzy or cottony looking you have either a fungus infection or a columnaria infection. If the area is very red and irritated it is most likely a columnaris infection, if not you may only have a bit of a fungus infection.

For fungus I would suggest treating with any of the better brands of fungus medication, just treat as directed.

For columnaris I would suggest treating with Furanace or Furan-2. If neither of these are available Maracyn-2 would be a good choice.

If you can't tell you can try a product named Binox which will treat both, but not as effectively as the above products.

Melafix is a reasonable preventative medication, but it far too weak to help cure the sick fish.

Best of luck with him

just leave it be.. it is in a new place and is probably not used to it. thats why it is not moving. the other cory is probably happy because it likes moving alot.. or it has eaten something that gives it energy.

You should release them into the tank and go from there. In a bag, especially if one is very active the other can get injured. The white stuff can be the fish's slime coat going into overdrive due to stress and getting banged around in transport. I would release them into the tank and watch them. Good Luck!
