I have a very large untreated (not painted or stained) cedar deck and gazebo in my backyard and I have squirrels chewing on it. I need to figure out something to spray on it that isn't stinky (since this is an area that we entertain in) that will repel the squirrels.
I have read all over the internet that they don't like hot pepper but all of the advice is for keeping the animals off plants. Does anyone know what I can mix the hot pepper into that won't discolor or damage the wood?
I would prefer a "home remedy" on this so I don't have to keep ordering stuff over and over - I have a feeling this is going to be a long term problem.

Let me add a few details to clarify.
1. We have indoor cats, so getting a dog isn't an option.
2. Anything that needs to be sprinkled around isn't going to really help because they are chewing trim boards that are about 12 feet up and on vertical posts.
3. We live in a very established neighborhood with TONS of huge trees, it is seriously squirrel central around here, there is no way I could trap enough of them to make a dent in the population.
What I need is something I can spray on my wood to deter them from my property.

1 bottle tobasco pepper sauce
1 gallon water
1 Tablespoon dish soap
Mix together and spray everywhere the little buggers are chewing.
Remember mothballs can be toxic if a pet or child eats them

We had a family of squirrels in the back garden that nicked and disappeared with all of our tulips bulbs. We managed to get rid of the problem by buying a squirrel trap and one by one caught the whole family of 6 of them, transfering them in the trap box, to a large woods about 2 miles from our home.
They look vicious when close to you, but when you open the trap door, they just run away from you as fast and as far as they can. These cages can be found by mail order on the internet. They are not too expensive and are well worse the money.
This was done in January 2007 and so far - 6 months later they have not returned. It worked and the squirrels are still happy elsewhere.

Snakes are organic and organic predators of squirrels and could scare them distant from the flower mattress. Use actually quite exterior hose or some thing that could fool the squirrels to think of of there's a snake indoors the plant life.

You can buy at pet stores whats called a bitter apple sray.I've never sen any animal that liked its taste an its clear.I think it will work for you the best.

Try putting down moth balls around the base of your deck & gazebo. You can also try spreading human hair clippings around the bases intead of moth balls. You can call a barber shop/hair salon. & ask them to save you a bag of hair clippings. Using gloves, spread the hair around & see what happens. I hear they don't like the smell of moth balls or human hair.

simple get an animal that will attack or chase away the problem don't add food or chemicals cause really it could damage it if not made to sanitize or varnish it get a pet and problem solved

Trapping is the only thing that actually works against squirrels.
Well, shooting them works pretty good too, but it doesn't sound like you want to do that.
