Well, they're all pretty nice. Mykonos and Ios are two the biggest party islands, though there's somewhere to go out everywhere. Santorini is also a nice, lively island, but doesn't have the same rep as the former two. Ios is fairly centralized, there's essentially one town on the island and it's filled with bars. The major beach in a quick walk from the town so you can lounge by the beach all day then head up to town for the evening. Mykonos' beaches are a bus ride from the town which makes things a bit more complicated. Sep. is after high season, but Paradise Beach is known for the afternoon drinking and dancing on the sand, bars, and wherever. However, it's not the wildness you'll find during the height of summer. Santorini is the calmer, as it draws tourism from all age groups. One side of the island are cliffs and on the far side are black sand beaches. I found these somewhat disappointing, it look kinda asphalt, and wasn't wonderful for laying out on. Also, black sand gets hotter. But the island is beautiful, the cliffs are incredible and the towns are nice.

I'm not sure if this is at all helpful. Don't stress about it too much though, the islands are amazing wherever you end up. Big, small, wild, mild, they're all fun. I should also mention Crete which is rather nice as well, but far larger. Crete's got a fair amount of variety from tiny fishing villages to larger towns, to the Vikos Gorge. Anyway, relax, figure out what's the most important thing to you, and then try and find the island that best suits it. Do you want large or small? Do you want a great nightlife or an average one. How important is a good beach? Do you want to stay in one spot or have somewhere you can move around on? This may help to narrow it down a bit.

Try Crete and rent a car in order to travel around the whole island. I suggest you go to as many places as you can and not stay in a city drinking day and night like all those dumb British tourists do.
Santorini is also GREAT! I've been there twice and it is a very powerful and intense island(volcano-island). Go find pics of these two islands online and it'll convince you to visit them.
Actually you can visit them both if you got more than a few days avialble, since they're pretty close(i'm not sure exactly how long it takes by boat, but definitely not more than 3 hours).
I tend to prefer these two islands more than any other. From the rest you could find alot beautiful ones, but none matching Crete or Santorini in terms of beauty.
Mykonos is a close third and has the craziest nightlife, while being pretty special nature-wise. Nice landscapes, but windy weather..and pretty expensice for your budget, though you can always find a small hole just to sleep.

Perfect place for you is Lagana in Zante, terrific night life & very close to beach. Young ones like you party all night, sleep until 2 or 3pm then off to beach for tan, rest to get ready for another party night. Cheap too. Many hols for under your budget & drinks, food cheap. Has McDonalds & Pizza Hut in case you prefer that type of food.
Could also try Sidari in Corfu. A bit more spread out than Laganas but am told by my own kids that it is great for young ones to have a great hol. Again, good beach & bars etc. & Greek people look after women so you feel safe on either island but, obviously, take the normal precautions.
Have fun wherever you end up.

It is difficult to recommend a few islands out of the 6000 that are around Any of the islands of the Cyclades should do fine for you. Except for Santorini which ha no beaches to talk about.
Ios, Tinos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros. Depending on how long you are staying you could do all of them in the order I gave you.
September is kind off season so prices will be lower.

have fun.

Crete is brilliant.Lots of self catering there. Been twice. Once to Maleme. and once to Plakia. You can visit the old leper colony from there. Also you can walk the Samaria Gorge. A full day and very hot. Take a hat.The resort of Chania is a great place.Boat trips and nice bars around the bay. Give it a go, you will have a brilliant time.
