Meteor Crater, Petrified Forest, Painted Desert. All close to Williams. You could see them all in a one day drive - they are all along I 40.

I've never taken the train from Williams to the Canyon, but that might be something to consider. It takes you very close to the South Rim - main tourist area. There are trams that take you to all the major observation points inside the national park on the south rim (including from the train station in the park).

IMO the only way to *really* see the canyon is up-close and personal as in, hiking and backpacking, but unfortunately that's not for everyone.
