I believe that Sarkozy's right wing policies are only going to stoke up the already strained racial tensions within France and will throw the country into trouble...don't be suprised if we see more of the scenes of two years ago where Sarkozy called the people who were demonstrating against discrimination against second generation immigrants "scum". Also, the only reason that Mr Chirac came out in support of Sarkozy after being non-committal at the start of his campaign is because Sarkozy has offered him indemnity from prosecution over claims of financial impropriety during his time as mayor of Paris. You may have realised that i don't like the guy

I'm hoping that, unlike Chirac, Sarkozy is able to succeed in changing the course of future French history.

Chirac had excellent ideas when he came to office but in the final analysis he was content to remain president rather than risk his position and fight for what he professed to believe in.

Chirac was a great disappointment and I'm hoping that Sarkozy will not be. I wish him good luck!

He seems a bit too much set against Turkey joining the EU for my tastes.
I want, like every other sane person, to make Turkey reform some of it's laws that we find represent human rights violation and so on.
But that's going to be alot more difficult to do if the president of one of the major powers in the EU is set against Turkey joining the EU at all.

Other then that I'll have to withhold judgement until he's been on the job for a while. Just wait and see if he's good or not =)

Great choice... will finally bring France into the 21st century! The 85%+ citizenry that voted should be applauded. I only hope the rest of Europe will continue this sensible trend set by Germany and France, and reject the Socialists that have helped to place them in a quagmire!

Well he seems to want to reform their economy to make it stronger. It's hard to believe that France's economy is ranked 9th out of the 10 largest EU countries (meaning 8 have stronger economies). But I expect a lot of people won't like his ideas, since it sounds like it he wants individuals to work harder (and Socialists don't want to work harder, they want someone else to).

It's a good thing. Hopefully having a right winger in there will get things jumping again.
