I have always been curious about this! How did they know what teams to choose for the National or American League? Someone help me out here!!!

The NL was founded in 1876, absorbing a few existing teams and founding a few new ones. The specific inclusive teams rattled around some for a few years, but settled down around the turn of the century.
The AL was founded in 1901, with a few quick moves soon after, but the familiar cities were fixed by 1903.
Expansion teams added:
1961 - two in the AL
1962 - two in the NL
1969 - two in each
1977 - two in the AL
1993 - two in the NL
1998 - one in each, with the Brewers moving from the AL to the NL to maintain the even cardinal* numbers required to obviate near-daily interleague play.
There was no "selection" as such; each league was formed separately, for the purpose of making munny. Businesses find their niches.
*Has nothing to do with St. Louis.

The National League was founded in 1876 with 8 teams. The American League was founded in 1901 with 8 teams of its own. Teams have come and gone, moved, been added, etc., but there was no pool of teams that were assigned to either league.
