x^2 – 9x + 8÷x^2 – 1
=((x -1)(x - 8) ) / (( x - 1)*(x + 1))
=(x - 8) ) / (x + 1)

(2x – 4 )/(2x + 2)
=2( x - 2) / 2(x +1)
=( x - 2) / (x +1)

1. (x - 8) / (x + 1)
2. (x - 2) / (x + 2)

For the first, you have to factor the top and the bottom. Top first: x^2 - 9x + 8 = (x - 1) * (x - 8). The bottom is: (x + 1) * (x - 1). Since (x - 1) is on the top and bottom, you can cancel them leaving (x - 8) / (x + 1) which does not reduce further.

For the second, factoring produces 2 * (x - 2) on the top and 2 * (x + 1) on the bottom. The 2's cancel out leaving (x - 2) / (x + 2) which does not reduce further.

Is this two questions?
Consider top line:-
Let N = (x² - 9x + 8) / (x² - 1)
N = (x - 8).(x - 1) / (x - 1).(x + 1)
N = (x - 8) / (x + 1)

Consider bottom line:-
Let D = 2.(x - 2).2.(x + 1)
D = 4.(x - 2).(x + 1)

Have we now to divide N by D?
If so:-
N/D = [ (x - 8) / (x + 1) ] / [ 4.(x - 2).(x + 1) ]
N/D = (x - 8) / [ 4(x + 1)².(x - 2) ]
