definetly save energy buy shutting it down. This also allows windows to do it's maintenance more often when it shuts down and reboots. You won't have as much junk in Temp files.
shutting down also keeps hackers out.

In most cases, if you're going to use it a few times throughout the day, it's best to leave it on until you go to bed at night. This is when you should turn off the computer - using the on-screen 'Turn Off' command on a PC or 'Shut Down' on a Mac. It can harm the computer when you simply press the button on your hard drive to turn off your computer because it forces whatever programs are running to quickly close without 'ending' properly.
If you know you're only going to need it once or twice throughout the day, you should check out the 'Sleep' settings on your computer. If you are concerned about saving energy, you can change the sleep settings in the Control Panel on a PC (System Prefs. on a Mac) so that the hard disks & screen turn off after as little as 3 min. of inactivity or as much as 5 hours!
Either way, you should always turn off your computer at night; it helps keep the computer refreshed and is proven to lower the likelihood of freeze-ups, crashes, errors, etc.

It is better to shut it down if you are not going to use the pc again but if you think you might again later leave it on. We leave them all day at the library but when we lock the doors at night we shut those pc down.

Well for every 10 degrees celcius your hardware in your computers life will be cut in half if left on all the time. So... If you are not going to be using your computer till the next day i'd say turn it off but if your like me and you use it periodically leave it on. Also when you turn your computer off for a certain amount of time it clears the short term memory. Which can make your computer's performance increase. If you leave your computer on for an extended period of time that memory can fill up and have to work even harder to clear and add new info. to itself. Hope this helps!

You should shut down the computer if you know you are not going to be using it. Below are a few benefits...
-Important updates are applied to your computer when it boots up.
-During shutdown a utility is run to clean up your computer and increase its performance/stability.
-Increases the operating lifetime of the computer.
-Protects the computer in the event of a power loss or surge (obviously this may happen during the day, but some protection is better than nothing).
-Saves significant energy and reduces heat output, which lowers cooling cost

There are different schools of thought on this issue. I usually err on the side of energy saving, but realistically they say if you turn the monitor off it saves just about the same energy. You might have to worry about fans burning out if you leave it running all day and night. I typically leave my computer on all day and then off at night. You have to decide what is right for you though

Shut it down. I shut my laptop down if I'm not going to be using it anymore that day otherwise it gets extremely hot. But I also do it because I don't any hackers getting into my system by leaving it on and connected to the internet all day long.
So I say shut it down for energy and safety reasons.

Shutting it down saves energy, which is important for the environment and all of us.
It will also prevent hacking attempts into your information which is stored on your computer.
I have learned to shut my home computer down if I am not using it for longer than an hour.
Have a great day.

If plan on using your computer within the next hour or so leave it on, if not turn it off. It is harder on a computers power supply to turn it on then to leave it on, but its still better for it to be off as long as you are not going to turn it on and off several times through out the day. Then there the power issue, my comp is a power hog and if you own a newer machine especially if its an S.L.I. ready or enabled comp. My power shoots up like 100 kWh when mines on. Also power cost verses power supply cost makes a difference, power supplies generally last along time and even high performance ones are not extremely expensive if you can change it out yourself. I personally leave my machine on all day so I can use it anytime I want even to just look something up on-line when it crosses my mind and turn it off at night when I go to bed. I also use it as a media center too so that kinda swayed my decision to leave it on.

It depends on how long you anticipate being away from the computer. If for a short time (1 hour or less), leave it running as re-booting can take some time depending on your connectivity and speed of your machine. If you experience a storm warning situation, turn it off until you are comfortable the storm has dissipated.

If you use it sveral times throughout the day then just put it to sleep (if using a Mac) or send it into HIbrenation or Standby (if usings Windows). Putting it to sleep actually shuts down the hard drive thus decreasing your electricity bill as well as excess energy that your system uses. You shoudl actually set it to go to sleep after a certain amount of time. Go to the Power settings for that (CONTROL PANEL)
If you using once a day then just shut it down.
